Day 3: Happiness

This is part of an ongoing (non-consecutive) photo series called the 30-Day Gratitude Photo Challenge.

Happiness.

Christmas.

Family.

Home.

When I want to think of happy thoughts I close my eyes and think of Christmas in the Philippines and how my mother always went out of her way to make it special for us.

A beautifully-decorated tree.

Lots of presents!

Mouth-watering food.

Decadent desserts.

Even though the country was considered third-world and very poor by world standards, everyone pretty much gave gifts to everyone they knew.

You can be 75 years old and still have lots of presents to open!

'Lack' was never a word to describe a celebration of the birth of Jesus.

Laughter. Fellowship. Love. Friendships.

Today, I am so grateful that my family and culture set a unique standard on the celebration of Christmas. What a blessing to be able to bring it to another country.

It is also such a joy to experience a different way of embracing the season here in the United States.

Fresh trees. Ornaments in every imaginable shape and color. Hot spiced cider. Snow. Fireplace.

Happiness is Christmas.

Thank You, Father, how You remained with me throughout this holiday season.
You are my source of joy.
It is always an honor to celebrate Your birth.

What Was The Best Gift You Received This Christmas?

Today is a great day to share what we got for Christmas! While I do not consider myself materialistic (I love handwritten letters & cards above everything else!) -- I am fascinated by innovative products and cool inventions that make life easier.

I must say that my husband, Robert, is one of the best gift-givers I know. He knows how to surprise me and picks gifts that say "I know you well and I know the way to your heart." Therefore, I am truly blessed and I don't take that for granted.

This Christmas my dear husband gave me three, very clever gifts that I feel are worth sharing because you might get some new gift ideas -- for a friend or for yourself!

The City Flat by GAP
Have you ever walked out of your home with fabulous high heels and end up regretting it after a couple of hours because your feet hurt so badly? Does an extra pair of flats sound like a good idea but it is always way too bulky to carry with you around?

The City Flat by GAP is an amazing solution to this problem! These flats are made of soft, pliable leather and has an elasticized opening, so it fits like a glove and is ridiculously comfortable.

The best part about it? It is foldable and it comes with a small drawstring bag! Robert got me the black one (which is the best color to start with because it matches practically everything I own) but it is available is many, many colors and textures!

Big bonus: these are the perfect pair to wear through airports!

Pandora Charm Bracelet
I am a sentimental person. Therefore, it is no surprise that I have always wanted to build a charm bracelet to signify important milestones of my life. However, I always dismissed this task and mentally put it on my "someday" to-do list.

I was so pleasantly surprised when Robert gave a Pandora starter bracelet with its first charm! The first charm is a cross -- which is symbolic of our move to Nashville next week (more on that in a future blog post). I am excited to add more charms to this bracelet as we experience more milestones and breakthroughs in the future!

Keurig Special Edition Brewing System
The Special Edition Brewing System brews a perfect cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa or iced beverage in under one minute at the touch of a button. Featuring chrome accents and a blue, backlit LCD display, the Special Edition brewer allows you to program water temperature, set the digital clock and Auto On/Off.

With the choice of three cup sizes, the Special Edition brewer offers a removable drip tray to accommodate travel mugs. I love the concept of a one-cup brewing system -- because it ensures coffee is always fresh, never stale!

The tiny, portion-controlled K-Cups allows the user to try different varieties of drinks -- something most of us cannot do when we purchase bags of ground coffee beans (we are kinds stuck with that kind for the allotted period of time).

I look forward to using this on my daily work-from-home routine. The cost per cup is about 50 cents -- far cheaper than the $4 cups we buy from coffee shops.

A Different Christmas

I hope you all had a beautiful, wonderful Christmas -- in however way you celebrated it! Robert and I had a lovely time. I was happy that he is spending it with his family and in his childhood home after years of celebrating it overseas.

It was definitely different for me because I did not get to experience the usual Christmas traditions I have become accustomed to practicing in my 30+ years of living in the Philippines. Nevertheless, it was a Christmas filled with hope and possibilities for me!

The only kind of Christmas I really knew was the sunny, tropical kind. My idea of getting dressed for Christmas was to be in a cute, pretty sundress. What a treat to wake up on Christmas Eve seeing this.

I used to deplore snow and the general concept of winter being a pleasant season. Today, I am finding myself getting used to it and appreciating the beauty it brings to my surroundings.

It still isn't my favorite time of the year but I realized what a $28 (thanks to fabulous coupon combinations!) thick, down jacket can do to make me less miserable. I can, today, humbly admit that my dislike of the cold weather was a product of a heart that refuses to embrace change.

Our church had a solemn Christmas candlelight service. I have a funny relationship with Christmas songs. I find them too boring to play on my iPod but I do enjoy singing it with a body of believers who lovingly honor the birth of Jesus Christ.

After the service, Robert took us to a property in Papillion, Nebraska which is famous of its elaborate outdoor Christmas decorations. It was quite a fascinating sight! We saw gingerbread men, a choir, folks skiing, drummer boys, the nativity scene, Snoopy, snowmen, a carousel, elves, helpers, and even a moving Santa Claus by the door (which I thought was a teeny bit creepy because it looked so real). If you live in Omaha, this is worth making a trip to.

I love giving presents! Probably one of my favorite things to do during the holiday season (aside from writing and mailing Christmas cards). And I am not going to lie, I love getting them too! It's not really about what I get, but the thought of someone thinking of me when they see something. Yes -- I feel really loved that way!

And of course, Christmas in Nebraska is not complete without my MIL cooking a delicious lunch! She roasts the best turkey -- I promise you! You think turkey white meat is dry and bland? Wait until you taste hers! It is soft, juicy and tasty. Her turkey should win awards.

Robert and I would like to thank family and friends who have thoughtfully sent gifts, cards, text messages, e-cards and made phone calls to wish us a merry Christmas. We really felt your love and I hope we were able to express it to all of you how much we love you back. The true meaning of Christmas is most felt when God's children take their time to express their love for one another.

If there is anything I can pray for you as you usher in the new year, please send them over to me! Hope you all felt the wonderful love of Jesus Christ this Christmas.

Shutterfly Holiday Photo Cards

I rarely use this blog to promote anything unless I experience something above and beyond my expectations. When I experience great service, I want to share it to all of you because it might help you make a better buying decision when the need arises.

I started looking around the Net for customized photo holiday cards that had lots of pretty designs and offered a good value for my money. I tried a printing service two years ago. The service was great but the look and feel of the card felt a bit cheap.

This year, I picked Shutterfly to print my 2010 holiday cards. The website had a beautiful brown design that I had in mind going into this project.

Uploading our photo into the design was easy. In fact, I initially made a mistake with the cropping and felt unhappy with how the printing came out.

I expressed my regret to Shutterfly customer support and they readily gave me free credits to re-do my cards. They totally did not have to do that but their desire for me to be 100% happy re-assured me that I picked the best printing service for my cards.

I proceeded in re-doing the cards and it only took a couple of days for it to be delivered to my doorstep -- and it came out perfectly! I just got done ordering a second batch and will probably order a third.

Are you looking for thoughtful gift ideas this Christmas? Here are some other items you can customize on Shutterfly.

These gift ideas are perfect if you have an extensive collection of family photos. I am so happy with the service of Shutterfly and I just thought of sharing with you this great customer service experience.

My Christmas 2010 Wish List

When you were growing up, did you ever have fun making a holiday wish list for yourself? I loved it and continue to love doing it every year as an adult. I really don't care if I get it or not (although when I do, I scream in pure joy!) -- I just love the process of fantasizing and window shopping!

Let me share with you my current holiday wish list. Hope you let me look into yours too!

How about you? What do you want for Christmas?
