Why does God take us to the mountain?

I really enjoyed the message in Bethel Franklin last Sunday, May 22nd. It was the first part of a three-week series called 'Double Calls.'

'Double Calls' are about stories in the Bible where God called the names of specific people twice. Last Sunday was about how the Lord called Abraham twice as accounted in the book of Genesis 22.

Genesis 22 tells the story of when God called Abraham to the mountain. To be honest with you, when I first read and studied this chapter, the words of the Lord was very unsettling.

"Take your son, your only son -- yes, Isaac, whom you love so much -- and go the land of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will point out to you." (Genesis 22:2)

Reading this passage brought me to another Bible verse -- Galatians 3:6-7 -- saying that we are also descendants of Abraham. Suddenly, the story of Genesis 22 became more profoundly personal to me. It made me realize that as Abraham's children, we all had to go through our own personal climbs to a mountain.

Why does God take us to the mountain?

I started looking at Hebrews 11:17-19 and it says,

"By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[a] 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death."

Why does God take me to the mountain?
Because He wants me to know certain things.

Things that I believe to be true but only through a climb I will know to be true.

I believe His love for me is far deeper than I have ever imagined.
Through a climb, I know that this is true.

I believe His grace is far wider that I can ever comprehend.
Through a climb, I know that this is true.

I believe His power is the only source in overcoming any obstacles.
Through a climb, I know that this is true.

He calls me to the mountain so I will know what I would not know otherwise.

Gone Are My Sundays ...

Oh how I loved my Sunday afternoons!

Sundays (1pm onwards) meant a long nap and a time to catch up on my favorite TV shows.

Yesterday, those days are gone.

And it is gone for best reason I can think of!

We started our very first youth meeting (ever!) in Bethel Franklin.

When I was in high school, I wish someone reached out to me and loved me the way Jesus did.

I had a really rough memories with my "religious" leaders in high school. They seemed to be more concerned about my good works rather than the needs of my heart.

It really messed up the way I saw God -- thinking that He was like that with me as well.

I am grateful that He rescued me; and by His grace and mercy, restoration became possible.

I consider it a privilege to extend that same grace and mercy to today's high school students.

Being a teacher of Christ-like love puts me in the position of actually being the student.

A season of giving and learning.

Always worth losing Sunday naps for!
