My Personal iPad Review

"How do you like it?" is the question I have been asked a whole lot ever since I got the iPad back in April. I decided to do a review until several months down the road so that I can get immersed in its usability and really know what I like and don't like about it.

Let me tell you first why I decided I needed one.

1) My full-time job requires that I create updates in dozens of social media and bookmarking websites all throughout the day. I have gotten accustomed to bringing my laptop with me all the time to keep my tasks going.

However, there are a lot of times where I have already created massive content with my laptop and I don't need a heavy computer to bring with me as I become mobile to spread the word about what I created. My back problems have gotten severe because of a lifestyle of carrying around a heavy work bag.

Remember: I also carry a camera, a notebook and a couple of books with me all the time!

2) I have been looking around since late last year for a solution to my problem. These modern smart phones seemed to be the most popular and available solution except that I was not feeling the thought of integrating my phone with a complex mini-workstation.

I have never been a big mobile phone user nor am I great at texting. Blame it on never having a home phone until I was 19!

Yes folks -- I got through my entire high school life never having to be on a phone with a girlfriend or worse, a boy. The cell phone that I use today is the most basic you can ever see and will probably be like that for a while.

(Note: I laugh at the thought of my future children trying to justify to me why they need a cell phone while they are still in high school)

3) I found something more appealing than an all-in-one power mobile phone. I thought that the newest generation of iPod Touch will meet my needs.

It had access to Wi-Fi and add some more tools that will eliminate me bringing heavy documents and notebooks every day. I made a decision to set aside $100 out of my paycheck every month so that I can buy it.

(Note: I have never been known to drop hundreds of dollars for a huge purchase. I love "earning" my way to get it. Therefore, the process of setting aside money every month brings so much more satisfaction.)

Just in time for Christmas season, I have saved up enough.

As I was about to buy it, I looked at the gadget and put off the purchase. Every time I played with the model unit, I found discomfort in using a tiny touch screen.

I kept on saying to myself, "I wish Apple would make a larger iPod Touch." Then I'll be 100% comfortable buying it.

Until then, I'll hold on to my "normal" way of working. I guess you know what happens next in our story.

Around that same time, a rumor was strong about an Apple "tablet" coming out. I admit that the rumor hardly made me excited because I figured that it was simply going to be a mini-Macbook (sort of like a net book).

However, on January 27, 2010, Steve Jobs answered the longing I kept on saying to myself. He introduced the iPad and what unveiled was indeed a larger version of an iPod Touch!

My dear husband said he will add whatever was needed to my gadget fund so I can finally get my hands on one and start working more efficiently. And finally, I went out and got it.

After a lot of thought, I got the 32GB Wi-Fi only model. Why? 8GB cannot accommodate my latest photos and videos. 64GB was just too large.

It turns out that the size I got is perfect. I get to use about 14GB any given day. If there was a 16GB model, I would have probably gotten that one.

I also decided to pass on the 3G model because I was certain I was not happy with current 3G providers in the Philippines and that I did not want to stay connected to the Internet all the time. I know that this poses real danger to me as I know this might tempt me in being online during those times that I should be spending in prayer and reflection.

6 months later, I still cannot believe how I was able to work without it. I get to check e-mails, edit content, update social networks, collaborate with co-workers, and stay in touch with trends related to my job.

And on top of work benefits, it does bring a lot of entertainment in my down time. I get to watch my favorite TV shows, listen to podcasts, review sermon notes, track my food journal, play my favorite Plants vs. Zombies, and read on the Kindle application.

For iPhone power users, this piece of technology will most probably not serve any more purpose than the mobile phone does. However, if you are like me who is looking specifically for something lightweight with a big, gorgeous screen -- the iPad is truly a blessing!

Is there anything I don't like about it? -- NOTHING! This I promise you. Everyone has given me their 2 cents about waiting for the newer generation iPad with a camera and Face Time (estimated release is January 2011).

The truth is, all of my laptops have webcams and I can remember using it only a couple of times. I did not see the point of waiting for newer technology that I know I will not be using much.

However, if you are a heavy video chat user, you might want to wait until early next year. Until I have a good need for it, I decided that the basic one will meet my needs perfectly.

If you are thinking of getting one, I hope this feedback will give you a better idea on how the iPad will (or not) meet your needs.

Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Concealer

I have been searching for a new undereye concealer lately. I have been using MAC's Select Cover Up Concealer and it perfectly gives great coverage for my face.

However, I need a shade lighter specifically for my eyes so that it looks "awake" throughout the day. It has to be in a smooth, creamy liquid that glides over my undereye circles. And it has to be streak-free of course.

I also want a concealer that will last for 18 months -- which is its average shelf life. I don't have the luxury of running out of high-quality concealer only in a matter of months.

I went to Sephora in Village Pointe to check out what's available out there. I love that samples are everywhere! It helps me come up with a more informed decision.

After looking around and trying on products, I picked Make Up For Ever's HD Invisible Cover Concealer.

Here is the description from the website.

What it is:
An oil-free, medium-coverage concealer that covers imperfections while remaining invisible to high-definition televisions and the naked eye.

What it does:
This concealer creates a soft-focus effect, brightening the eye area while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a natural, radiant look. The innovative soft silicone applicator enables precise application for a perfectly even finish on camera and in person.

My verdict? The concealer delivers what was promised. It truly takes out the effects of fatigue or lack of sleep.

A bit of a warning though. Some reviews have said that this product has a tendency to separate and I can totally see that. It's best if you shake the tube well before application.

How about you? Do you use concealer specifically for the eyes? What is your preferred brand?

12 Best Drugstore Makeup Finds

A lot of ladies out there will probably agree that we all can't afford pricey department store makeup at most times. I personally do not have a big budget to work with when it comes to cosmetics.

That's why it brings me so much joy when I stumble upon a great product from U.S. drugstores that works wonderfully -- and not spending a lot in the process! I have tried and tested LOTS of drugstore makeup since 1997 and I have found true gems among the long aisles.

Here are the top twelve items in the drugstore makeup aisle that have served me well throughout the years.

1) Revlon ColorStay Lipliner ($6.94)
This lip liner's Nude shade is the best neutral color for most lips. I use this after I exfoliate and condition my lips. I put on the lip liner and it stays put throughout the day -- even when my lip stick fades.

2) Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss ($5.94)
I have been a big fan of the Super Lustrous line since my high school days. The lip stick is great but when it came out with the lip gloss, I was hooked. I prefer applicator-based glosses instead of tubes -- and it does come out with a good applicator. The love the colors that are available in this line.

3) Physicians Formula Healthy Wear SPF 50 Bronzer ($12.97)
I must have bronzer on me all the time. Why? Using merely translucent or pressed powder does not appear well on camera. It looks flat and one-dimensional. Bronzer makes my skin look healthier and more natural on photographs. I find that a matte finish in a medium shade works best for me. While most bronzers have shimmer in it, this one doesn't and it gives me a fresh glow.

4) Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Gloss ($8.26)
One of the best-smelling lip glosses I have come across. It smells sweet and fruity. I use this when I go for a high-shine look. My lips look so healthy and soft with this product.

5) Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Duo ($7.47)
There are times I love putting on eye shadow and there are days when I feel it's just too much work but I still want to look polished. These sets of eye shadows (two for each palette) is perfect on those lazy days. Super blendable and so many neutral colors to choose from. My eyes never have to go naked again.

6) L'Oréal HIP High Intensity Pigments Concentrated Shadow Duo ($6.78)
I love highly-pigmented eye shadows especially on occasions where I like to put on a smokey eye. However, I cannot afford a MAC eye shadow most of the time. The HIP line is an awesome alternative to accomplishing the bold eye. The texture is rich, silky and crease-free.

7) L'Oréal True Match Super Blendable Blush ($8.47)
This cheek blush truly lives up to its name. It comes in powder form and its texture creamy and easy-to-blend. This is by far the best drugstore blush out there.

8) L'Oréal Colour Riche Lipcolour ($5.00)
One of the creamiest lipsticks out there. The colors are rich and it leaves my lips moisturized. This lip stick is my favorite item to use on date nights or special occasions. Bonus: every lip stick has a matching lip liner and lip gloss!

9) Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush ($5.94)
I have tried a lot of spreadable cheek tints out there and most have disappointed me. This blush in mousse form is still the most reliable product I have used on days when I want my cheeks to like they were just naturally pinched. I love this so much that I used the Bronze shade on my wedding day.

10) Maybelline Lash Stiletto Ultimate Length Washable Mascara ($6.94)
Do you remember the all-time classic Great Lash Mascara? Maybelline now has something even better. The Lash Stiletto Mascara came out in 2008 and has been my go-to mascara ever since. The result of this lovely wand? Long, separated, glossy lashes.

11) Almay Intense i-Color Shadows ($5.96)
For eye shadow trios, Almay's Intense i-Color line offers the best color combinations. It is supposed to bring out the intensity of different eye colors but I got the ones for blue and gray eyes as well. Super easy-to-blend!

12) Cover Girl Lipslicks Lip Gloss ($3.94)
Do you like using a lip balm / gloss that improves the appearance of the color of your lips? This product just does that. I have been using it for over 15 years and I always have one in my makeup bag. So reliable on needed touch-ups and moisture.

Watch out for my next "drugstore" list on skin care products! Have a beautiful day!
